CHAPTER 22

DAVEY

I had enough of Scott and Danielle and stupid Burgundy Chapman with her horrible mouth. I had to find Aaron. We needed protection. I needed protection. Scott and I could defend ourselves within reason, but Aaron was an all-state wrestler, and I think he also has his black belt in something. Probably?

Maybe if we had him with us, we might be able to think for just one second while the world crashed around us. Maybe Aaron could give us just enough time to stop what was happening.

Leave it to Scott to be all sentimental at a time where we needed to be getting shit done, telling me to be safe. Screw him. No, not literally, not like the man-eater universe. Gross. No. Me and Scott Simmons? No, gracias.

Besides, even if we did do something together, all I could think about was his mangled body under Aaron’s truck, and not even I’m that messed up. And knowing Scott, he’d never shut up the whole time. Also, I imagine he’s the kind of guy who knows way too much about the universe and theology behind Battlestar Galactica.

I checked my phone and saw that it was third period, Aaron’s remedial English class. Not that he’d ever really mind skipping class, but this one would be especially easy. I texted him on my way there.

Davey: Ask to go to the bathroom. I’ll meet you right outside your class.

I walked past The Pit, where seniors gathered under the main stairwell, leaving extra space just in case the universe had changed again without my knowing (my head was spinning less and less each time) and the bats were back. I was lucky enough one time. I didn’t think Ted would be around to save my ass a second time. I rounded the corner and leaned against the water fountain directly downstairs from where the bats had taken me. This way, if Mrs. Haversalle checked the hallway before she let Aaron out, she wouldn’t see me standing there.

I checked to see if Becca had texted me. Maybe she’d come off her stupid spell in the library and wanted to rejoin the group.

Nothing.

Aaron touched my arm, and I jumped in surprise and fear.

“Everything okay?”

“No.”

Aaron’s eyebrows scrunched together in concern. He put his hands on my shoulders and pulled me into a hug.

I hated that I needed this hug at this moment. This was the first time in a long time anyone had shown real care to me (besides Scott and his half-assed attempt). Even if he didn’t really know what was going on, it was nice to be held and reminded that it was all eventually going to be okay.

The world around me burst into flames. I heard someone screaming and jumped back, trying to get a hold of the situation. The ends of my hair were on fire, as was my shirt and one of my shoes. I slapped my hands against myself until the flames went away and looked up to see if Aaron was okay.
